Running water for Driefontein brings relief after 10 years of water tankers

Only residents in the low-lying areas of Driefontein received water from communal stand-pipes in the past.

Residents in Driefontein’s high-lying areas finally have running water after having had to rely on water tankers for the past 10 years.

The community was elated when an elevated water tank and nearby water pump were unveiled at the weekend before last. Construction began in August last year.

The completion of the R6.76-million project means that more than 2 000 households will now receive water from communal stand-pipes.

“Previously, various parts of the community would receive water on a rotational basis every four to five days. The new elevated tank will now supply 200 kilolitres of water to the residents,” said ward 21 councillor, Nkululeko Sithole.

The elevated stand tank is taller than most at 25 metres.

Only residents in the low-lying areas of Driefontein received water from communal stand-pipes in the past, while other parts remained severely affected by shortages owing to an existing, but inadequate ground reservoir, which could not ensure consistent supply to the entire village.

Additional communal stand-pipes have been installed to improve supply distribution.
