Heroic tow truck driver Sugan Singh laid to rest

He tragically lost his life while assisting a critically injured motorist on the southbound lane of the N2 outside Ballito.

Members of the local tow truck industry are grieving the death in a highway accident of Shakaskraal tow truck driver, Sugan Singh.

The 33-year-old tragically lost his life while assisting a critically injured motorist on the southbound lane of the N2 outside Ballito on Saturday night..

Sugan successfully extracted the driver trapped in his Ford Ranger after a single-vehicle accident, but his heroic act took a devastating turn when both he and the rescued motorist were struck by a secondary vehicle.

Sugan died at the scene. The rescued driver survived and was taken to hospital.

The unidentified driver abandoned the scene, leaving behind chaos and tragedy – but also his car.

Police have not yet made an arrest and an investigation is underway.

Sugan had devoted seven years to running his tow truck business, SLS Towing.

Described by his sister Kerisha Singh as someone deeply passionate about helping others, he had left a significant impact through his compassionate gestures.

Sadly, it was such an act of kindness that led to his untimely demise.

Kerisha said Sugan was not only a brother but also a source of inspiration for the entire family.

“To us, our Sugan died a hero. He will be missed by his family, friends and his towing family. We hope that justice will prevail for those responsible for his tragic end,” said Kerisha.
Sugan is survived by his wife Yuvika, and their son Joshi.

Singh’s funeral was held at the Shakaskraal Community Hall on Tuesday, where his colleagues in the towing industry and emergency responders paid tribute to him a with convoy of vehicles to the KwaDukuza Crematorium.
