Optometrists are your eye care partners

Your optometrist is also there to help when things become difficult to see.

Eyes are more than just windows to the world.

They are complex, delicate organs that deserve our care and attention.

When it comes to safeguarding your vision, optometrists such as Joanne Kalil, based in Ballito, are here to help with advice on eyecare especially when it comes to children’s vision and their learning.

Children’s vision and learning

As parents, we are dedicated to ensuring our children’s success in education. Joanne underlines the important role vision plays in their learning journey.

Beyond the ability to read an eye chart, children use visual skills like maintaining and shifting focus and keeping their place while reading. They ideally also develop strong binocularity and good depth perception.

“Children may appear to cope well using memory and listening skills, making visual difficulties less noticeable without an assessment.”

Joanne describes vision as a learnt skill, saying that ensuring your little ones see well, with equal input from both eyes during their early years, means they will have better vision as they grow older.

The goal is to provide children with clear vision and good visual skills both for now and as a basis for good vision in the future.

Preventative eye care

Joanne’s experience helping older people with visual difficulties, highlights the significance of proper eye care throughout one’s lifetime, even before the need for glasses arises.

She stresses the value of picking up and managing any issues in their early stages to help maintain our vision as we age.

“Adults and children who don’t need glasses or use over-the-counter reading glasses should have regular eye appointments to check on the health of their eyes and other practical aspects of their vision. This is particularly true for those with underlying conditions such as diabetes.”

Eyes are irreplaceable, and safeguarding one’s vision is a lifelong commitment.

Prioritising diabetes management, the care of our children’s vision and preventative eye care for ourselves, helps us to maintain clear and comfortable vision.
