Umdloti Smart Village beefs up security

Managing committee member Petrus Scholtz said the latest upgrades had been two years in the making and he was grateful for the new and existing contributors who made this possible.

An uptake in membership has enabled Umdloti Smart Village (USV) to further beef up security in the village with the addition of seven state-of-the-art continuous monitoring cameras to be installed in strategic locations soon.

This in addition to the five existing Sniper numberplate recognition cameras that have been instrumental in crime prevention through the early identification of suspicious vehicles, as well as in tracking vehicles used in the commission of crimes in the town.

Besides being linked to 24-hour off-site monitoring, Marshall Security area manager, Kyle Theron, said the new cameras are also fitted with artificial intelligence software that create virtual lines that trigger an alarm in the control room when they are breached.

“Pictures then show up in real-time on our screens showing us what exactly crossed the virtual lines, which enables us to better respond ,” said Theron.

He explained the cameras can also be set to a timer to only activate an alarm at certain times of day when it’s meant to be quiet. This eliminates unnecessary activations during the day when people move around in public spaces.

Theron said USV and Marshall Security also planned, once more funds become available, to introduce moveable modular cameras that are motion activated and send a short video clip to the controller when triggered.

These could be moved around strategically and placed wherever additional surveillance is needed, such as in the forest or similar vulnerable areas.

USV managing committee member, Petrus Scholtz, said the latest security upgrades had been two years in the making and he was grateful to the new and existing contributors who made this possible.

He also thanked Salta residents making donations to the USV, who he said saw the value in safeguarding Umdloti’s beaches, restaurants and other public spaces.
