Scooter brigade rallies for Umdloti community

Taking riders along about 20km of scenic dirt roads around the Mount Moreland and Dube TradePort areas, the quarterly breakfast run is a fun event to build community and showcase local small businesses.

The third edition of the Umdloti Cane Rat Scooter Rally on Saturday raised R6 000 towards revamping the neglected ablution facilities and shower area at the Point.

Co-founder of the initiative, Jason Hewitt, said with the Umdloti Smart Village’s blessing, they envisioned extending the paving at the showers to just before the two surfboard shaped benches, turning it into a scooter parking area.

Whether it is because he saw a rerun of the cult movie classic “Easy Rider” or he is just addicted to the thrill, golden retriever Buddha never misses a ride on the wild side with mom Kirsten Greene. Dressed in his Springbok supporters garb, Buddha claimed his usual front seat during Saturday’s Cane Rat scooter rally in Umdloti to help raise funds for the community.

They will then extend a pathway down to the beach so that the dune plants could grow undisturbed.

Having secured a donation of tiles from local businessman Paulo Falconer, who also offered the Cane Rats a special on having their scooters washed at his car wash after the rally, Hewitt said their plans include possibly retiling the bathrooms and replacing missing toilet seats and doors.

The Umdloti Cane Rat Rally is a fun breakfast run that takes riders along mostly dirt roads in the Mount Moreland and Dube TradePort areas.

Taking riders along about 20km of scenic dirt roads around the Mount Moreland and Dube TradePort areas, the quarterly breakfast rally developed as a fun event to build community and showcase local small businesses such as The Chocolate Garden and Spirit of Africa along the route.

“Community is what makes a village. The rally is about bringing together a group of likeminded people, shaking hands with people you haven’t met before and making new friends. The fundraising is just a by-product,” said Hewitt.

The Umdloti Cane Rat Rally is exclusively for the scooter brigade.

With a portion of the route utilising the eThekwini Mountain Bike Association (EMBA) trails on Tongaat Hulett land, Hewitt said they are discussing incorporating an EMBA day pass for the next event, planned for February.

“This will also enable us to promote the EMBA and contribute financially towards maintenance of their routes. Scooters don’t cause damage to the trails like dirt bikes often do, but help clean up the trails with the tyres picking up thorns and other debris as they mosey along.”
