Sewage spill nightmare in Tongaat

A major concern raised by the community is the contamination of the drainage system, leading to effluent finding its way into a nearby river.

Residents on the corner of Abu Govender Road and Andra Drive in Sandfields, Tongaat, have been grappling with ongoing sewage spills left unattended for the past eight months.

Frustrated residents told The North Coast Courier the issue has been a recurring nightmare for them for several years.

Despite previous interventions by the municipality to address the problem, relief has always been short-lived residents say.

More or less within a week of repairs, sewage spills resurface, a persistent cycle with no end in sight.

Residents are desperate for a lasting solution.

John Mabaso, who resides about five metres from the sewage spill, said the offensive smell makes it impossible for residents to open windows or doors.

He said he often goes on walks away from his house just to escape the unbearable odour.

“People who walk past always ask how we manage to survive in such intolerable circumstances, but we have no choice,” said Mabaso.

A major concern raised by the community is the contamination of the drainage system, leading to effluent finding its way into a nearby river.

Residents said they reported the problem to the eThekwini Municipality, but there has been no progress to remedy the situation.

eThekwini Municipality’s City spokesperson, Gugu Sisilana said they face a problem of manhole clogging because people dispose foreign objects into the system.

“Our teams have attended to other cases in the same area. This shows that unless the residents’ attitude changes, we will always have the same issue reoccurring. We appeal to all residents to play their part.

“We have escalated this matter to the relevant unit so that they can attend to it. We apologise for the inconvenience this is causing the public, however we again appeal to the public to work with us by ridding our system of alien objects,” said Sisilana.
