KwaDukuza Municipality boosts beach safety with two new jet skis

One jet ski will be stationed at Zinkwazi and the other at Willard Beach.

KwaDukuza Municipality’s (KDM) acquisition of two new high-performance jet skis will significantly improve rescue responses along the North Coast’s beaches, especially during the holiday seasons.

Two brand new Yamaha 1 050cc Waverunner jet skis, valued at just over R1-million, were handed over to lifeguards at Salt Rock main beach last Thursday by mayor Lindile Nhaca.

Nhaca emphasised that public beach safety was a top priority for the municipality.

“Our beaches will now be even better secured and well-guarded. Credit must be given to the councillors for their diligent efforts in procuring these two jet skis.”

Senior lifeguard stationed at Willard Beach, Sipho Sokhulu, carried out a test rescue operation with one of the jet skis after the handover.

Senior KwaDukuza lifeguard Sipho Sokhulu couldn’t wait to test-drive one of the new jet skis.

He lauded the new jet skis as a significant improvement on what they had before.

“I can confidently say they will be highly effective, especially during the December holidays.”

Sokhulu, who has rescued about 80 people in distress during his eight-year tenure with KDM, emphasised that the powerful jet skis will allow them to respond from Willard Beach to as far south as Salmon Bay in about a minute on a calm day.
