Ballito trio claim Banger Rally title in their ‘BokCar’

Teams faced everything from fishing and donuts challenges to flat-out speed runs over the course of three days in picturesque Midlands surroundings.

Three North Coast locals recently took on the inaugural Banger Rally in the Midlands and brought home the sought-after silver duck for good measure.

Travis McLea and father son duo Johnny and Gary Mutton took on a series of challenges in their ‘BokCar’ (pronounced Bokke in honour of the World Cup) and ended up winning the whole thing.

Falling under the banner of the popular Cannonball Run series, the Banger Rally challenged teams to bring a pre-1990 car which cost less than R100 000, alterations included.

“It’s all in the name of good fun,” says Johnny, “But unsurprisingly everyone gave it their best shot and a few cars had to be taken home on a flatbed!”

“We all got to have a go driving and navigating so everyone got a feel for the car. The whole thing was really well organised and we hope to see some more North Coast teams next year,” said Travis.

Kicking off at Notties Hotel, the groups moved onto Gowrie Lodge and Zingela Nature Reserve before finishing off back at Notties for the final evening and prizegiving.

“Eleven teams and 32 competitors were there in total and it was a fantastic time. We got to know everyone who travelled from around the country and will no doubt see them all back in 2024,” said Johnny.

The BokCar was admittedly not pre-1990, but the trio happily paid a fine to be included and ended up winning by just under one point overall.

Donning clown masks throughout as part of the dress-up component, they won the inaugural silver duck hood ornament which has to be fixed to the bonnet before next year’s event.

Aside from their event victory, the BokCar team also raised around R60 000 for the Hero Burn Foundation, a charity which helps burn victims across the country.

They did so after securing buy-in from a number of local businesses, including Jacek Marine, Mozambik, Fiamma Grill, Beachwood, Hops, Miss Penny Brands, The Barrel, HydroWash, RE/MAX and Prestige Auto, while Painting On Purpose handled the decorations on the car.

“Thanks to everyone who contributed towards the fundraising effort. For anyone interested in competing, get your car ready for September next year when the Banger Rally returns,” said Johnny.
