Salt Rock ward councillor updates community on projects

It was also heard that R240-million was budgeted for the Dukuza substation currently under construction, which is likely to be completed by August next year.

A public ward meeting held by Salt Rock ward councillor Privi Makhan last week was attended by 40 residents, who were briefed on several projects.

These included electricity, civils, planning and development, and community projects.

Attendees heard that a budget allocation of R7.1-million had been set aside by the KwaDukuza Municipality for streetlight repairs across all wards.

“Twenty-two streetlights between Tiffany’s shopping centre and Salt Rock main beach are currently being changed to LED lights,” Makhan said.

It was also heard that R240-million was budgeted for the Dukuza substation currently under construction, which is likely to be completed by August next year.

It would improve KwaDukuza’s electricity capacity in the southern region, and once online would increase the current supply of 30 megavolt amperes to 80.

On civils, work was underway to rehabilitate road and stormwater infrastructure at Ralphs Place following the road’s partial collapse during the April 2022 floods.

She urged ward residents to continue reporting potholes and blocked stormwater drains.

With developer-funded upgrades progressing well on the P228 Flag Farm road, Makhan updated residents on other road projects.

One is the installation of traffic lights at the New Salt Rock shopping centre, with approval for the project by the Department of Transport still pending.

Referring to community projects, Makhan said the Back-a-Beach initiative at Salt Rock main beach was well underway and would run for a period of six months.

This entails the regular cleaning of the beach, funded by Hunt Properties and supported by Dolphin Coast Waste Management and The Litterboom Project.
