CommUNITY in action aims to uplift and upskill

Project CommUNITY is backed by the Social Employment Fund and is being implemented by non-profit organisation weFEEDsa in 45 communities across KwaZulu-Natal.

A landmark project will see 80 unemployed North Coast residents upskilled and with job security for at least the next 10 months.

Launched locally in La Mercy and Tongaat on Monday, Project CommUNITY will have the dual benefit of improving the areas through cleaning and greening programmes.

The group of 23 in La Mercy and 57 in Tongaat will average two days of work per week and are employed to clear litter, clean public spaces and comb beaches, all while undergoing skills improvement programmes.

Project CommUNITY is backed by the Social Employment Fund and is being implemented by non-profit organisation (NPO) weFEEDsa in 45 communities across KwaZulu-Natal.

“The project will include a total of 1 161 people across the Ugu, eThekwini and Msunduzi municipal areas and is designed to bring communities together for a common goal,” said weFEEDsa CEO, Zahid Fakey.

“We have partnered with other NPOs and volunteers in all of the areas who have identified the participants and we are very excited to get going.”

SIATA Academy was the partner NPO in La Mercy, while Tongaat Child Welfare and the Tongaat Civic Association played the role in Tongaat.

In the two weeks prior to launch, the participants spent their time in the classroom to learn workplace skills and ready themselves for the big day.

“The hope is that aside from the employment security, the project will also help the participants to become more employable going forward,” said Fakey.

“Everyone has had help opening a bank account and, over the course of the project, they will create a CV and grow their network to give them the best chance once it finishes.”

The participants all report to a group leader and will be assessed on their commitment to the project and reliability.

Look out for the Project CommUNITY groups in their orange bibs when next in one of the participating communities.
