1. Waterberry Coffee Shoppe
Dolphin Crescent, Ballito

It was clear from the first sip why Waterberry won the best milkshake category.

The Salted Caramel and Lemon Meringue gourmei milkshakes at Waterberry Coffee Shoppe.

The Lemon Meringue and Salted Caramel gourmet milkshakes (R60) were hands down the best milkshakes we have ever tasted. Our favourite, the Lemon Meringue, was like drinking the dessert of the same name.

This milkshake was thick, creamy and topped with cream and crunchy meringues.

The tangy lemon perfectly cut the sweetness, the result both tart and sweet.

Worlds apart from the average commercial milkshake made with flavours from a bottle, this was a standout dessert.

Waterberry is a popular coffee shop set in a lush coastal forest at Ballito’s heart. Make sure to take a turn along the forest walkways to experience it for yourself.

2. RocoMamas
Level 6, Ballito Junction Mall

Forget about a milkshake alone, the Slow Death by Chocolate Freak Shake (R79) at RocoMamas is a dessert for two – at least!

The Slow Death by Chocolate shake at RocoMamas certainly lives up to its name.

You will have to take our word for it that there is chocolate milkshake underneath the many decadent toppings, which include Oreos, KitKat fingers and Whispers.

There is no denying that chocolate is the hero of this experience, with each element adding different textures and flavour profiles which provide the spark for the chocolate bomb.

Though it could have easily become too much, the fact that the actual milkshake is good makes a huge difference.

Once you’ve finished the whipped cream and other adornments, what remains is a thick but drinkable shake that is not treacly-sweet.

Enlist the kids or take an Instagram-friendly photo, this is a shake you will not soon forget.

3. Concha Café
18 Compensation Beach Road, Ballito

Brownies beautifully decorate a delicious hot chocolate and Milo milkshake called the Shake and Bake (R70), coupled with vanilla ice cream, topped off with sprinkles, cream and chocolate sauce.

The Concha hot chocolate and Milo delight.

You’ll need to use your hands at first to enjoy this dessert, using a brownie to dig deep into that deliciously fresh cream.

This milkshake stole our heart, all before we could even get to actually use the straw and enjoy a sip.Be sure to give it a try for yourself.

4. Burnedale Bistro
Burnedale Farm, Umhlali

The Burnedale Bistro has a great atmosphere and is a lovely location for a family’s outing.

Burnedale’s colourful Tuity Fruity.

The Tuity Fruity milkshake (R42.50) made with fresh fruit and ice cream, is likewise a holiday in a glass.

This is a vibrant milkshake that comprises a dragon fruit base mixed with blueberry and vanilla ice cream.

The fruit and ice cream fusion is topped off with fresh fruit and hits all the right taste buds. It’s cold, sweet and refreshing.

The generous serving and attention to detail were spot on. It looks amazing and tastes amazing – a great choice for a hot summer’s day.

5. Krispy Kreme
Ballito Lifestyle Centre

The Salted Caramel milkshake (R62 – large) is surprisingly not as sweet as the name suggests, pulling off the perfect balance between sweet and savoury.

If you’re looking for convenience and a sweet treat to indulge in, then Krispy Kreme is the place to go.

This milkshake is comforting and hits the spot, leaving your sweet cravings fulfilled.

The accompanying fresh whipped cream and caramel balls are an extra treat. Best enjoyed after the school run!
