Ballito man dies while spearfishing with his son

Paramedics suspect the spearfisherman suffered a heart attack.

A 16-year-old boy brought his father to shore at Thompson’s Bay, after his father suffered a possible heart attack while spearfishing this morning.

The 56-year-old Ballito resident, Colin Albertyn, was declared dead by paramedics shortly after he was brought to shore.

Albertyn’s brother-in-law, Volker Grunewald, said he had started throwing up and appeared to be having a fit before he went under the water.

“Daniel, his son, was very brave and strong because he managed to get his father to the shore.

“We don’t know yet whether it was a heart attack or not,” said Grunewald.

Albertyn moved to Ballito a month ago from Kloof and he had been diving and spear fishing for over 30 years.

KwaDukuza lifeguard superintendent, Bongani Xulu, said lifeguards saw the pair were in trouple and came to assist, starting CPR before paramedics took over.

“Despite efforts of paramedics, the man was declared dead on scene,” said IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Paul Herbst.
