SANDF deployed to KZN and Gauteng in wake of violent riots

Brigadier General Mafi Mgobozi confirmed this morning that The South African National Defence Force would be used quell the unrest.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) have been sent to KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng to assist the police.

Brigadier General Mafi Mgobozi confirmed this morning that SANDF had started with pre-deployment measures following a request for assistance.

The request came from the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS).

SANDF will assist law enforcement agencies in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

“This will be to quell the unrest that has gripped both provinces in the last few days,” said Mgobozi.

The duration and number of soldiers deployed will be determined based on the assessment of the situation on the ground.

“Further, it must be emphasied that the SANDF’s deployment objective is to provide safety and a safe working environment for members of the Saps and other law enforcement agencies,” said Mgobozi.

SANDF will also “carry out their Constitutionally-mandated law and order duties”.
