Hit-men open fire on Mandeni taxi owner’s car, killing wife and son

The vehicle was riddled with bullets.

A mother and son were brutally murdered on their way to Mandeni town on Sunday.

The murders may to be linked to the taxi violence that erupted in the town last Thursday where 2 people were killed and 7 injured in a clash between opposition taxi groups, but this has not been confirmed.

The 44-year-old woman and her 23-year-old son had been travelling from KwaHlomendlin, south of Mandeni, when they were ambushed by unknown gunmen who opened fire on the vehicle.

Police found 22 cartridges at the scene.

The victims had been using the woman’s husband’s car who is a taxi owner in Gingindlovu, said police.

“So far we know that the husband was supposed to attend a funeral in Gingindlovu on Sunday but instead his family used to the silver-grey Mercedes-Benz to go shopping,” said Newark police spokesperson Malusi Ngubane.

In a separate incident, a 21-year-old woman was found with her throat slit at the Chappies Section in Mandeni on Saturday.

“A case of murder was opened at Sundumbili police station and police arrested a 28-year-old suspect.

“He appeared at the Eshowe Magistrates Court on Monday,” said KZN police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele.
