Plant a tree at Sibaya Precinct, where 1 600 endangered trees are finding a new home this week

The public is invited and encouraged to join in on the planting that will continue until Sunday, any extra hands will not go to waste.

The Sibaya Precinct may at first appear to be a concrete jungle, but head developers Devmco are taking steps to ensure nature is not left behind.

In celebration of Arbour Week (1 – 7 September), the company has pledged to plant 1600 Warburgia Salutaris trees in the precinct area, and you can join them.

The public is invited and encouraged to join in on the planting that will continue until Sunday, any extra hands will not go to waste.

The Warburgia Salutaris, commonly known as the Pepper-bark tree or Isibaha is native to the North-Eastern parts of KZN, and has become endangered.

Along with Sappi who donated the plants, Devmco are creating a protected zone so that the trees and the biodiversity they create can continue to thrive.

As Zan Bowker, Horticultural Consultant for Devmco says, “Each species of tree comes with its own ecology, if it goes extinct then so does a whole subset of butterflies, insects and bees as a result.”

The company is committed to working towards less carbon footprint, said Bowker.

“We are holding the responsibility to protect the natural forests and wetlands that surround the precinct.

It takes a team to raise a forest.

“It’s all about creating a positive ripple effect for the biodiversity.”

As the evergreen tree is native to the environment, it ensures there will be no detrimental effect to the other plant life in the immediate area.

Planting will continue until Sunday 6 September, and is free to the public.

Roll up your sleeves and bring the family to be part of building a forest for future generations.

Planting runs daily from 9.30am until 3pm, weather permitting.
