Bridging a way forward for the residents of Nyathikazi – KwaDukuza

KwaDukuza municipality broke ground to build a reinforced concrete bridge which will connect the residents to facilities in neighbouring communities.

A planned bridge for the Nyathikazi community will pave the way to a better life for hundreds of residents.

For years, the Ward 3 community, who rely mostly on the living they make from sugar cane farming, have had to make do with unreliable concrete slabs as a way to cross the Nyathikazi River leading to the nearest village, Darnall.

When it rained, their homes were often flooded while children and adults struggled to get to school and work every day.

This Tuesday KwaDukuza municipality broke ground to build a reinforced concrete bridge which will connect the residents to facilities in neighbouring communities.

Announcing the R5 million bridge, mayor Ricardo Mthembu said he was relieved that dignity would be restored.

“Our people will no longer need to carry extra clothes to change into after crossing the flooded Nyathikazi River.

They will no longer take cover in bushes to change into clean clothes.”

Mthembu added that the current set up was inconvenient and embarrassing.

“We are aware that heavy rains, in the current setup, meant children do not go to schools or access the library in Darnall. Parents could not go to work and even the agricultural business is affected during harvesting because tractors and other needed modes of transportation are barred from reaching this end of the community,” he said.
