Land invaders build illegal shacks in Sheffield

The shacks were built on the vacant land opposite Sheffield Manor, along the road leading to the Flag Farm.

The illegal erection of more than ten shacks in Sheffield last week is believed to have been politically orchestrated.

DA Ward 22 councillor Malcolm Hubner said the shacks were built on the vacant land opposite Sheffield Manor, along the road leading to the Flag Farm.

He said that the word from his ward committee was that opposition parties were motivating their members to invade the land. These claims are being investigated.

“People came in with fancy cars from different areas and were not the average dwellers nor were they local.

“Currently, there are 11 families living in that area but they have been there for many years.

“KwaDukuza municipality was fast to react and issued the invaders with a notice to leave. They will be going to the area on Wednesday for an inspection and if they have not left then they will be issued with a second notice.”

Last year, more than 25 shacks were erected in the same area for the purpose of renting them out and KDM had them removed.

The land is owned by the municipality and there are reportedly discussions about formalizing the area for housing purposes.

This could not be confirmed by the time of going to print.
