N2 roadworks: Road to nowhere, says DA

"If you want to get to the truth - follow the money."

Tempers have hit the tipping point over the ongoing excuses for the never ending work on the N2 north of Salt Rock.

DA MP and deputy chair of the party’s federal council, Natasha Mazonne, visited the roadworks on Monday and was shocked at the state of affairs.

“Sanral needs to stop all this cloak and dagger secrecy – we want to know exactly who has been paid, and for what,” she said.

Sanral Eastern Region project manager Ridhwaan Mahomed has told the Courier on many occasions that the contractor was only paid 27 percent of the fee (R15,5m) before going into liquidation.

However, Mazonne said the DA “knew for a fact that Sanral had paid out 50 percent of the total” of R57,4m.

“We need to join the dots by tracking the accounts. If you want to get to the truth – follow the money,” she said.

Suren Sahadave of Stanger is one of many commuters who have entirely run out of patience.

“Peoples’ lives are at risk daily. I lost one of my good friends in May this year on that very same stretch of road but this still doesn’t bother the authorities.

“As long as they are collecting the toll fees from the thousands of vehicles that use the road daily, they are absolutely content,” he said in a letter to the Courier.

“Procurement abnormalities are commonplace in government.

“Unfortunately for us, the taxpayer will have to fund these failures.

“Sanral doesn’t care if they lost R15 million due to their inability to manage a simple project because the taxpayer will fund the next tender that goes out!

“Who knows what will become of that! Maybe another three years of waiting and inconvenience to the public?”
