Driefontein creche stands vacant for seven months

Despite the R1 million price tag, it was also found that there were insufficient toilet facilities and play equipment.

A much-needed creche in Driefontein which KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) forked out R1 million to build, has been standing vacant for seven months.

KZN Democratic Alliance social development spokesperson Sharon Hoosen said the party was calling on the KZN MEC for social development to intervene after they found that the previous ANC ward councillor had interfered with the staff recruitment process – promising jobs to women who had not originally applied for a position at the creche.

“As a result of his interference, the municipality was forced to stop the recruitment process after an uproar from people involved in the selection panel process.”

Hoosen said that despite the R1 million price tag, it was also found that there were insufficient toilet facilities and play equipment.

DA Driefontein councillor Tommy du Toit said the creche was one of many in the Driefontein area that was meant to provide a safe haven for children while their parents were at work. Other creches have reached capacity, some catering for more than 80 children.

“The facility took almost a year to build and it is a shame that it is not yet operational.”

KDM media liaison Sipho Mkhize, said the issue had to be addressed by Du Toit and that the municipality would fully support him.
