Darnall sinkhole an accident waiting to happen

As more of the road caves in, motorists are concerned the whole thing will collapse.

Gaping wide on the P403 road between Darnall and Zinkwazi is a sinkhole reminiscent of the yawning gates to the underworld.

Residents and commuters on the road have been watching for months on end as the hole in the road grows ever larger, to the point where it could now swallow a whole vehicle with room to spare.

“I am just waiting for the rest of the road to cave in,” said Darnall’s Gail van Wyk, who said she uses the road constantly.

“At night you cannot even see the sinkhole properly.”

More than seven metres long in places and three metres deep, the hole is just waiting to claim a life.

The chasm is about seven metres long in places and there are no barriers or signage to warn drivers of the danger.

Asked when the hole would be repaired, the Department of Transport (which is the responsible authority) said a contract has been awarded and they were still waiting for the supervision approval documents.

No indication was given as to when work would start or be completed.

“Just wait until the sinkhole claims its first human life, then we will see some action,” said Darnall resident Johan Botha.
