The SASSA rush – what you need to know

Many residents are finding difficulties in swapping their SASSA cards as this can be done at only four venues on the North Coast

Many pensioners who are to migrate to a newer, savvier approach to collecting their grants are confused about which post offices they can go to.

The South African Post Office and the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) launched a new card for Sassa beneficiaries on May 3 offering, apparently, a safer and more affordable solution to money collection and banking.

However, with the months passing by, many residents are finding difficulties in swapping their SASSA cards as this can be done at only four venues on the North Coast, which does not include Ballito.

Swaps can be made at the main post office branches being Tongaat, Stanger, Shakaskraal, Sundumbili and Maphumulo.

Guaranteeing the card swap as a swift process, South African Post Office COO, Lindiwe Kwele urged people to make the change before the end of August to avoid a last minute rush.

“It is important for beneficiaries to know which card will cost and how much when exercising their choice.

“The new SASSA card is yellowish to gold in colour. You can still change to the new SASSA card even if you unwittingly accepted another card recently. It is really your choice.”

The old SASSA card will be fully phased out by December this year. The new cards will offer a number of benefits including three withdrawals from participating stores like Shoprite, over the counter cash withdrawals at the Post Office, free card swipes at participating stores and one free ATM balance enquiry per month.

The new card is designed to prevent problems with illegal deductions and the R10 service fee will be done away with.
