UPDATE: ANCYL threatens to bring new private hospital to a standstill

Despite the hospital's claims that most positions have yet to be filled, the protesters trashed the premises demanding jobs

The KwaDukuza ANC Youth League has given KwaDukuza Private Hospital 30 days to respond to their demands and have threatened to bring the facility, which was due to open in three weeks time, to its knees.

Almost 700 KwaDukuza ANC Youth League forced their way onto the hospital property last Friday, causing thousands of Rands in damages to the newly built facility, calling for local employment.

The demonstration comes after the ANCYL claimed to be dissatisfied by the hospitals “corporate arrogance” and accused them of not prioritising KwaDukuza youth for jobs like gardening, security services and cleaning but sourcing companies from outside the district.

In their memorandum the league demanded:

  1. Locals get priority to supply goods and services to the hospital, priority be given to locals for both for skilled and unskilled labour.
  2. All contracts signed thus far be reconsidered to involve local companies – particularly those that are youth owned.
  3. That local stakeholder who are relevant to running the hospital like professions and authorities be included in decision making.
  4. That there be visible outreach programmes as well as substantial social investment in the community.

“We are here to relay the message of our unemployed graduates who have to put up with regrets upon being turned down on jobs they apply for.

“We are here to represent the experienced skilled workers who are idling at home.

“We are here to chart the course for our budding entrepreneurs who are given all sorts of excuses as to why they cannot be given space to ply their trade.

“We are here to demand one thing: give the youth of KwaDukuza a fair chance!” said ANCYL secretary Musa Zondi.

About 700 ANC Youth League in the Greater KwaDukuza region members marched along the R102 to the new KwaDukuza Private Hospital calling for jobs.

However, KPH manager Ravi Manihlall said most of the positions had not yet been filled and management was discussing a way forward.

“We have only filled some of the positions as the hospital has not yet opened and we do not yet know what the demand will be. The hospital directors will be meeting to discuss the memorandum.”

The hospital has not yet calculated the actual cost of the damages to the facility.
