High winds cause chaos

In Durban and surrounds building structures have been badly damaged and trees knocked over by the winds

The strong gusting wind currently experienced in Durban and along the Dolphin Coast is expected to pass by around 9 pm tonight.

Contrary to reports on social media, a cyclone is not expected to hit the Durban area.

According to South African Weather Services forecaster Julius Mahlangu, the wind speed is currently measured at 33-44 knots at the King Shaka International Airport.

“The wind started from the south and moved northward arriving at Durban about two hours ago and has now reached Richard’s Bay. It should die down by 9 pm tonight.”

In just a few hours, chaos ensued in the city, with reports of building structures being badly damaged and fallen trees.

Four people have also reportedly been injured in Durban CBD when a roof collapsed.

eThekweni Municipality Emergency Control and Disaster Management Unit advised residents to take extra caution during this time.

“We encourage all residents to remain indoors, in a safe area. Durban is experiencing strong winds and rainfall. The Emergency Control and Disaster Management Unit is monitoring the situation.”

Mahlangu said although the wind speed should decrease by tonight, rainfall measuring between 20-30mm is expected toward tomorrow afternoon.

Emergency calls should be logged to 031-3610000.
