After the non-stop partying at Blythedale Beach on December 16, where a man died because ambulances could not get through the crowds, KwaDukuza mayor Ricardo Mthembu has vowed that there will be more police and a ban on partying after sunset over the coming Christmas and New Year weekends.
Blythedale residents are outraged at what they describe as total chaos on the beach and in the parking area of the village on the Day of Reconciliation public holiday, when as many as 3 000 people carried on drinking and partying non-stop through the weekend.
An ambulance was unable to clear a way through the crowd and paramedics were threatened as they tried to reach a man who had been stabbed on the beach. He later died from his wounds.
Village residents are bracing themselves for the coming weekend, when as many as 10 000 people are expected for the beach festival organised by the KwaDukuza municipality.
Mayor Mthembu said he was arranging for a stronger police presence, in an attempt to curb drinking in public and unruly behaviour.
After seeing what happened this year, he admitted council should rethink the beach festival plans.
“I feel sorry for the residents. A public festival should not be held in a residential area and I plan to have it moved to Nonoti Beach next year.”
KwaDukuza municipality communications officer Lindiwe Mbonambi said they were adjusting their plans for the beach festival.
“We have increased the number of traffic officers, tourists monitors, points persons and security deployed at Blythedale Beach.
“We have identified specific parking areas for light motor vehicle and public transport. This will aid in reducing traffic congestion within the village.
“There shall be ongoing vehicle check points concentrating on unroadworthy vehicles, driver compliance and restricting the transportation and consumption of alcohol in public areas.”
The residents association said it should be clear to council that the village was not equipped to handle such large crowds.
