Ballito electricity woes caused by faulty transformer

KDM staff have isolated the cause of the periodic outages.

Ballito, Salt Rock and surrounding areas have been experiencing intermittent electricity outages since yesterday.

Irrate locals have taken to social media to complain and the Dolphin Coast Neighbours page on Facebook has been inundated with questions regarding the cause and expected duration of these outages.

Nick Hall, KDM’s technical services electrical engineer, told The Courier that the source of the problem was a faulty transformer in the Ballito Business Park.

The transformer in question is a 10MVA, 33 000 volt transformer.

“It was quite a challenge to locate the source of the problem in the first place,” said Hall.

“At first we thought it may be a broken overhead line, or perhaps an issue with cables.”

“We have since isolated the problem as originating from this transformer, though investigations are ongoing as to what exactly is wrong with it.”

“An oil and gas analysis will also need to be done on the transformer,” Hall added.

At present it is unknown when this fault will be fixed, but KDM staff are on site attending to the issue.
