Ratepayers caught unawares as KwaDukuza changes banks

A notice informing ratepayers was apparently placed in all consumer statements.

Some Ballito residents and others from around KwaDukuza who paid their utility bills have to thier dismay discovered that their statement do not reflect their payment.

Corrinne Austin of Ballito said she first realised their was a problem when her friend angrily told her that although she had paid her monthly water and lights account, her statement showed that she was still in arrears.

“This concerned me as well so I checked my statement and it also did not reflect the last payment made.

“I phoned the municipality and they told me they have changed banks from FNB to Absa. So why did the municipality not inform us?

“This is really shocking and inconvenient as we now have to get FNB to return the money and repay using the Absa bank account.”

The North Coast Courier asked the municipality for an explaination.

KwaDukuza knowledge and communications officer Sphelelo Ngobese said details of the banking changes were placed as notices on all consumer statements.

“In terms of regulation 30 of the supply chain management policy, a contract for banking services may not exceed a period of five years, we had to go through a competitive bidding process in order to appoint a new banker for Council.

“This process was duly followed and Absa were the successful bidders.

“Council has ran numerous radio adverts and talk shows introducing the new bankers.”

The KwaDukuza current account number with ABSA is 4087627126.
