Struggle heroes honoured

Cato Street in KwaDukuza has been renamed after EV Mohamed and Hulett Street after Goolam Suleman.

Struggle heroes of the apartheid regime, EV Mohamed and Goolam Suleman were honoured on Monday when two streets in KwaDukuza were named after them.

Cato Street has been renamed after EV Mohamed and Hulett Street after Goolam Suleman. The two men contributed to the advancement of the liberation movement with the late president general of the African National Congress (ANC), Chief Albert Luthuli.

They played instrumental roles in the struggle against the oppressive government during apartheid.

Suleman and Mohamed worked closely with Luthuli whose political career was marked by a programme of civil disobedience for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

The men supported Luthuli in his work by receiving correspondence, arranging couriers, served as secretary, driver, and availed facilities for underground ANC meetings.

At the official unveiling of the street names, KwaDukuza mayor, Ricardo Mthembu said, “One of the responsibilities of the democratic government is to recognise the role played by those who contributed in various ways to the liberation of the people of South Africa so that their contribution is not erased from the memory of the nation.”

Cato Street was previously named after an early Natal settler and Durban’s first mayor, George Cato and Hulett Street was named after sugar magnate and philanthropist, Sir James Liege Hulett.
