Upbeat mood at Salt Rock voting station

Voting stations will remain open until 7pm, after which the counting will begin.

A substantial  queue had already formed at 7am at the Salt Rock Library voting station this morning for the start of the municipal elections and a jovial mood prevailed.

Many people had literally rolled out of bed to get their voting done early so they could relax for the rest of the day.

Sipping coffee, and chatting to each other, people were relaxed, if a tad sleepy, and the process was organised and smooth.

Danita and Uli Kliem brought their dogs Jack and Tilly with them to vote.

The area was divided into two groups.

People with surnames from A to Mar queued at the library hall while those with surnames beginning with Mas to Z queued at a marquee.

So far 600 people have voted at Salt Rock Library, with an average of 15 minutes spent to cast their vote.

Voting stations close at 7pm tonight.

After a 15 minute break, the counting begins in the library  itself, a secure venue.

“I’ll be very glad when this is done as I am tired of hearing about elections on the news,” said Salt Rock resident Uli Kliem.

Vere van Heerden said he was optimistic: “These are exciting times.”

“Very happy to be here to vote,” said Thandeka Zungu.

Drew Hort said with a joking smile that he would ‘hunt down’ anyone not voting.

Constables Nobuhle Mhlaba and Nomthandazo Zwane said they did not expect any trouble at the Salt Rock Library voting station, but they remained alert for troublemakers.
