Elections 2016: What to do on voting day

The South African municipal elections take place on August 3 2016. If you have registered and have your ID ready, here’s a brief guide of what to do on voting day.

Wednesday has been declared a public holiday to enable all South African citizens to take part in the 2016 municipal elections.

However you must have registered to vote in order to take part on August 3.

If you are not sure whether you are registered or where you need to go to vote you can SMS your ID Number to 32810 (R1.00 per SMS), or check your registration on the IEC website.

Municipal elections are held every five years to elect councillors who will be responsible for governing your municipality for the next five years.

The councillors will serve on the town, city, metropolitan or district councils that ensure services that impact our daily lives, including water, electricity and sanitation.

When you reach the front of the queue on Wednesday you will show your identity document at the door and it will be scanned and a slip printed.

Your name will be crossed off the voter’s roll and your left hand will be examined for previous ink markings.

Each voter’s left thumb will be marked by drawing a short line on the thumb area where the nail and cuticle meet and the identity document will be stamped.

It is important to check that there is an official stamp on the back of the ballot papers.

Your vote will be done in a private voting cubicle and is completely confidential.

Vote for the person you believe will best represent your community’s interests in council for the next five years.
