Protesters shut down Mandeni water supply

The police have been unable to remove protesters from the Sundumbili water treatment plant.

Disgruntled protesters took over the Sundumbili water treatment plant in Mandeni in the early hours of Monday morning, June 6, shutting down the water supply to the Isithebe industrial area and surrounding areas.

The protesters still on the premises.

According to the Ilembe district municipality water manager for Mandeni, Xolelwa Mazibuko, there has been no production since yesterday.

“We managed to survive yesterday up to this morning because we had enough storage. There are certain areas today that do not have water especially in Isithebe and some factories have been closed because of this. There are also parts of Sundumbili township that do not have water,” she said.

The district municipality’s water storage is expected to run out before the end of today.

Ilembe municipality apologized profusely to all residents and ratepayers.

“Your patience and understanding whilst we are dealing with this matter is highly appreciated.”
