Protesters also tried to stone an Umhlali police van.

Toyi-toyi’ng since the early hours of this morning, an angry mob in Shayamoya attempted to set fire to their councillor’s house, said police.

Umhlali SAPS spokesman, Vinny Pillay said all main access roads to the township were closed with tree branches, burning tyres and debris since about 5.30am.

This is the second time today that protestors attempted to damage councillor, John Phahla’s home.

However with the assistance of his neighbours, police were able to disperse the crowd before they caused any damage to the house.

“No arrests have been made yet but the police are doing what they can to take control of the situation,” said Pillay.

The crowd is reportedly protesting against the lack of employment and is unhappy with their councillor, John Phahla.

Protesters also attempted to stone an Umhlali police van but none of the stones hit their target.
