Driefontein protest on pause

The regional executive committee of the ANC met with community leaders today.

Six Driefontein residents met with the regional executive committee of the African National Congress at KwaDukuza this afternoon.

This follows a week of unrest in the township that climaxed in the burning of the community hall.

They reportedly discussed community’s complaints: chiefly that they had accused their councillor Zwayi Mdluli of manipulating the ANC candidate selection process for the local government elections. They do not want him or the four candidates selected to represent them.

“The ANC has promised to have a meeting this afternoon and they will get back to us. The situation will be calm for now,” said a resident who asked to remain anonymous and claimed to be one of the six.

The mass protest, that started last Monday, resumed again in the early hours of this morning.  Fourteen residents were arrested last week Wednesday for public violence after the community hall was torched.

The ANC was not available to confirm their agreement with the residents.

People gather on the streets of Driefontein.
