14 Driefontein protesters arrested

Police managed to disperse Driefontein protesters after 9pm last night.

The police arrested 14 Driefontein residents last night for public violence.

Umhlali SAPS spokesman, Vinny Pillay said Driefontein protesters were finally dispersed after 9pm.

“Yesterday, protesters set the community hall alight, and stoned a police vehicle. They were also lighting up tyres and trees near schools,” said Pillay.

“Armed protesters fired shots at police and Public Order Police fired rubber bullets at the protesters in order to get the crowd away from the burning hall.

“This morning so far, there is no protest activity and the R102 is open. We are monitoring the area.”

Driefontein residents took to the streets again yesterday reportedly because they are unhappy with the ANC candidates selected to represent them.
