Police battle Etete protesters through the night

Vehicles are prevented from entering or leaving Etete again today.

Etete protesters attempted to barricade the R102/Shakaskraal Link Road to prevent people from getting to work at Palm Lakes early this morning.

Umhlali SAPS spokesman, Vinny Pillay said police were able to prevent about 300 people from blocking the road.

“We managed to chase them back,” he said.

The Etete protesters are still stopping vehicles from entering or leaving the area so people may be unable to get to work today again although many are using back roads.

Pillay said the R102 remains closed from Etete to the Umfolozi FET College in Groutville.

The residents of Etete told Courier journalist, Siboniso Dlamini they are protesting because the construction of the RDP houses promised was meant to start in April.

To date, there has been no sign of any building and no communication about the reason for the delay.

Armed with spears and knobkiereis, protesters demanded that KwaDukuza mayor, Ricardo Mthembu address them in person and explain the reasons for the delay.

The mayor is expected to address them today at 9am.

Yesterday, protesters said they will not move until either the mayor or Premier Senzu Mchunu had met with them.
