Driefontein protesters fire shots at police

Protest action in Driefontein has intensified and residents have set the community hall alight.

Armed Driefontein protesters are firing shots at police and have set  the community hall alight.

Umhlali SAPS spokesman, Vinny Pillay said the situation was extremely volatile.

“So far no police have been injured,” said Pillay.

Driefontein protesters took to the streets again yesterday and today, reportedly because they are unhappy with the ANC candidates selected to represent them.

Ballito 911 Comms’ Donovan Chetty  said the protesters are set on damaging any municipal buildings and vehicles.

The fire brigade has arrived to douse the flames at the community hall.
