UPDATE: Protest numbers swell with sympathisers

Etete protesters refuse to leave until Mayor Ricardo Mthembu addresses them personally.

Etete remains in lock down as the residents of ward 7 (Velani township) have joined forces with the ward 20 (Khalasukwe township) protesters.

The ward 20 residents are reportedly upset the RDP housing construction did not begin as promised at the beginning of April.

The residents told Courier journalist, Sbosiso Dlamini, that they are upset because no-one is informing them about the reason for the delay.

“The protesters are refusing to leave the R102 until KwaDukuza mayor, Ricardo Mthembu addresses them,” said Umhlali SAPS spokesman, Vinny Pillay.

“The mayor is on his way to speak to the people.”

The R102 is closed from Etete to the Umfolozi FET College in Groutville.

Burning tyres, a large tree, railings and boulders have been used to barricade the road and some protesters are armed with spears and knobkieries.
