UPDATE: Police fire rubber bullets in Driefontein

Residents are accusing their councillor of manipulating ANC processes.

Police are reportedly firing rubber bullets to disperse Driefontein residents as they have been protesting from early this morning.

According to a resident who asked to remain anonymous, the community is demanding their councillor Mzwayi Mdluli  step down.

He said Mdluli has failed to bring development and service delivery for the past 10 years, and they are also not happy with the four candidates nominated by the ANC for the council seat in the forthcoming local government elections.

On Saturday, March 19 ANC members protested accusing Mdluli of manipulating ANC processes of nominating candidates.

They said they preferred Wiseman Bhila over any of the four chosen candidates.

People who want to go to school or work are affected, because there is no transport going into and out of the area.

KwaDukuza Traffic chief Johnny Moodley said the R102 is open at this stage.

Residents are left with no transport as all roads in Driefontein are closed.
