Protest action in Isithebe and Glenhills

Protests in KwaDukuza and Mandeni areas have disrupted traffic this morning.

This Monday morning dawned with two protest groups blocking roads in KwaDukuza town and Isithebe.

In both cases, the issue of the lack service delivery is the reason according to Mandeni station commander, Ziningi Zulu.

Nyoni station commissioner, Colonel BC Dhladhla, who was at the Isithebe scene, said at 9am the roads were being cleaned-up and it was safe for motorists.

Business Against Crime (BAC) manager, Steve Fox said the Isithebe protest, which started at 1.30am was well-orchestrated as by 7.30am peak traffic hour, the entire Isithebe estate was on lock down. He said the reason for the protest was the firing of  a local Induna.

“The people made quite a mess,” said Fox.

“They tore down trees and street lamps, but now it has gone quiet and the roads are being cleared.”

People were burning tyres at the protest in KwaDukuza, in the Glenhills area where KwaDukuza warrant officer Johannes Khoza confirmed the reason for the protest was the lack of service delivery.

A  resident in the Glenhills said parents stopped their children from going to school, fearing their safety.

The resident said it appeared the Stanger Training Centre and both Glenhills Primary and Glenhills Secondary were affected.

The protest also meant some employees could not report to work on time.

Fox also said the strike at the R102 between Mandeni and Gingindlovu had begun again.

Yesterday protesters have blocked the R102 between Mandeni and Gingindlovu with burning logs, apparently because they are fed up with government’s inability to supply them with water during the drought.

Areas in the Ilembe district where the taps have run dry have been supplied water by tankers.

However, people living in the rural area between Gingindlovu and Mandeni claim they have not been delivered water.
