Roads are quiet for now
Businesses and residents in Shakas Head area should remain on high alert.
The N2 and R102 are open and all is quiet but IPPS Security owner, Frank Libidi warned businesses and residents in the Shakas Head to remain vigilant as they are at high risk.
Umhlali SAPS spokesman warrant officer Vinny Pillay said there are no protesters around for now.
Last night protesters reportedly attempted to burn down a business park in Shakas Head.
IPPS Security owner, Frank Libidi said a crowd of about 30 aggressive people attempted to set alight a business complex next to Shakas Head last night. “We fired warning shots and used a bit of muscle to disperse the crowd,” he said.
Libidi said he left at 11.30pm and saw about 10 police vehicles in Shakas Head who remained the night to monitor the situation.
“Twenty people were arrested for public violence and were released on R500 bail each last night and would appear in court today,” said Pillay.
Protestor and Shakas Head resident, Fanokwakhe Ntaka said “We are angry that some of us were arrested. The protest is not over until someone addresses us”, said Ntaka.
A crowd more than 500 strong closed the N2 and R102 yesterday with burning tyres and tree branches and then set fire to ward four councillor Jetro Banda‘s house and car in Shakas Head.
Banda was taken to safety.
The cops used rubber bullets to chase protesters off the Chakas Rock bridge above the N2 just before 7am this morning.
