Protesters back on Chakas Rock bridge, advance on business parks

Police arrest 20 people for public violence.

Protesters reportedly attempted to burn down business parks in Shakas Head earlier this evening.

Minutes ago IPSS Security had to fire warning shots to disperse the crowd, reported Umhlali SAPS spokesman warrant officer Vinny Pillay.

He said the police and security companies would remain in the area throughout the night monitoring the situation.
Protesters also returned to the Chakas Rock bridge this evening.

“Earlier today 20 people were arrested for public violence. They will be released on R500 bail each tonight and will appear in court tomorrow,” said Pillay.

While the N2 remains open there is a high chance of it being closed again.

Protestor and Shakas Head resident, Fanokwakhe Ntaka said earlier today the community will not return to their homes until the authorities has addressed them.

“We are angry that some of us were arrested this morning; we don’t know why and we need them back,” he said when protesters had gathered at a soccer field in Shakas Head.

“The protest is not over until someone addresses us”, said Ntaka.

Ntaka said tonight that he had heard that KwaDukuza mayor, Ricardo Mthembu would meet with the protesters at 12pm on Saturday.

We were unable to confirm this with the municipality.
