No go for Tiffany’s robots

KZN transport department buys time to solve traffic problems.

All proposed development in and around the Tiffany’s/Foxhill areas may be frozen for six months to give the KZN transport department (DoT) time to come up with a solution that will solve the current traffic problems.

The outcome of years of debate surrounding the traffic problems at the Tiffany’s-Sasol Salt Rock intersection is that robots will not be erected and the entrances to Tiffany’s shopping centre and the Sasol garage must be moved.

The bustling intersection of the shopping centre entrance, Salt Rock Road (P330) and Old Fort Road that leads to the petrol garage, a school, church, residential estate and a number of businesses, has become extremely dangerous. Pedestrians, school children and vehicles all share the road, which becomes gridlocked at rush hours.

The KZN DoT chief traffic engineer, Wlodek Gorny, said the entrance to the shopping centre was far too close to the N2 Umhlali/Salt Rock interchange. The department wanted a moratorium on any and all development around the Foxhill/Tiffany’s Spar areas until they had found a solution.

If the KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) accepts the moratorium on development, the proposed KFC drive-thru restaurant at the Sasol garage, Sheffield Square shopping centre and all further residential developments along the P330 and Sheffield Beach Road, will be put on hold.

“Putting robots up at Tiffany’s would negatively affect the on and off-ramps to and from the N2,” said Gorny.

“They would be unsafe, largely due to the steep ramp at the Tiffany’s entrance/exit, and would not solve the traffic back-up at peak hours.”

He said the entrance to the Tiffany’s centre should ideally be from Sheffield Beach Road, next to the Anglican church.

A robot there could be shared by the proposed Sheffield square shopping centre, Tiffany’s and the church.

Another robot could be placed at the Sheffield Beach Road/Salt Rock Road T-junction.

“The Old Fort Road could then possibly remain where it is or, depending on the proposed linkage between Ballito and Salt Rock, be re-routed to meet up with Sheffield Beach Road and turn the T-junction into a four-way stop.”

The proposals are expected to come before council before the end of this month.
