What a mess!

Residents and shop owners have to endure filthy streets.

Shakaskraal has been in a disgusting state for the past three weeks.

The company that was given the tender to clean the streets claim to have not been paid and withdrew their services.

Business owners and street vendors said the state of the town was an eyesore and affected them badly.

Nomthandazo Ndlovu who sells fruit and vegetables on the street said people did not want to buy their produce because of the unsavory conditions of the area in which they are operating.

“Although we clean up our own business spot, the dirt around us becomes a problem for us,” said Ndlovu.

Other business people suggested that if the municipality is failing to clean the town they must at least provide enough dustbins.

KwaDukuza municipality communications officer Sifiso Zulu said the contract for the company who won the tender, expired and had to be extended.

“The contractor is now back on site. We apologise for any inconvenience that was caused due to the processes of extending the contract,” said Zulu.

It is not the first time that the residents of Shakaskraal have had to tolerate filthy streets. It seems to happen whenever KDM is in the process of renewing the contractors’ contract.

At the beginning of the year the town was in a filthy state for a month, while the municipality was deciding as to whether the service should be outsourced or performed internally.

Zulu said the council is yet to take a decision and when that has been done, the community will be informed.
