Trees uprooted on Dolphin Coast, hurricane a hoax

Wind gusts reached up to 90 kilometers per hour.

Winds averaging between 25-35 knots (about 60 kilometers per hour), with gusts of up to 45 knots (about 80 to 90 kilometers per hour) whipped across the Dolphin Coast on Monday bringing down several trees in its wake.

KwaDukuza firemen, KwaDukuza Parks and Gardens and Specilaised Rescue joined hands to clear the roads. An enormous tree with a two metre wide trunk fell across the Chaka’s Rock Road, taking several smaller trees with it.

“It took us all working together for about two and a half hours to clear the road,” said Specialised Rescue’s Brett Moran.

More fallen trees were also attended to in Hillary Drive and Sandra Road in Ballito and some houses experienced minor damage to foof tiles and the like.

SA Weather Services forecaster, Aslam Sardiwalla confirmed that panic over supposed 120 kilometers per hour winds that were said to hit the coast over the weekend had originated from a hoax message that circulated via e-mail and on social networking sites.
