What a waste!

Residents watch fresh water leak into the road while the drought forces more water interruptions.

During this dry time, Chelmsford Crescent in Tongaat is continually being watered by fresh, clean water, running down the road.

Milbin Perumal owns the property that is home to the horrific leak that has been the cause of endless email writing, phone calls and house visits.

Perumal first reported the underground water leak from the council water line on August 26 to the municipality.

He continued reporting the leak again and again, but two months later, the leak is still going strong.

“The water from the underground leak surfaces in my property and is flushed out onto the road through my storm water drain pipes,” said Perumal.

“I witness clean water lost from my property running down the road every day, while we are experiencing water interruptions because of the drought,” said Perumal.

Two weeks after he first reported the leak, the operations department said the issue had been transferred to a different department.

Eventually workmen arrived and determined that the leak was from a mains pipe, but nothing has been done to fix it.

In the meantime, Ethekwini Head of Communications, Tozi Mthethwa said the water situation is dire and that they apologise for the prolonged water interruptions.

She said the municipality urges residents to report illegal water connections and water leaks to 080 131 3013 or email eservices@durban.gov.za.
