No more daily water supply

Drought hits Ilembe, more people experiencing water restrictions.

With the drying up of the Umvoti River, the severe drought has tightened the screws on the Ilembe district.

The area is now so dry that the Ilembe district municipality (IDM) is unable to implement a time of use water rationing schedule.

“Water is supplied to consumers when it is available,” said mayor Welcome Mdabe.

Affected areas supplied by the Umvoti Waterworks include KwaDukuza CBD, High Ridge, Warrenton, Stanger Manor, Townview, Rocky Park, Shakaville, Lindelani, Lot 16, Memory, Lloyds, Doesburg, Mbozambo, Stanger Heights, New Guelderland and Glenhills.

Mdabe said Stanger Hospital and other places battled for water because they were on high ground.

“If we keep getting low volumes of water we will have a huge problem on our hands,” said Mdabe.

He said the Ndwedwe municipality, Groutville, Maphumulo municipality, Zamani township and Darnall were all receiving a reduced supply and a 50 percent reduction was on the cards.

IDM spokesperson Khululiwe Makhaye that the R9 million received from the National Disaster Management Centre has been fully used in drilling boreholes and refurbishing small water schemes.

She said the R37 million allocation from the department of water affairs was used to hire water tankers and buy jojo tanks.
