Water restrictions start in Tongaat

The Tongaat area will be hit by water restrictions to try keep the Hazelmere Dam going.

The drought is beginning to bite Ethekwini, as the municipality announced the implementation of water restrictions to all Tongaat consumers starting on Wednesday.

According to the Ethekwini water and sanitation unit, this step is necessary in order to reduce the consumption of the Tongaat area, so that the water transfer scheme can continue.

The scheme, initiated by Umgeni Water in May, sees eight million litres of water being pumped from the Tongaat River into Hazelmere Dam, which is at 28.5%.

To keep the scheme going, the Department of Water Affairs have approved that the Tongaat area be reduced by 30%.

Depending on the cooperation of the residents, the restrictions may be extended.
