ACDP calls for dismissal after municipal crash

Councillor said employees actions are a breach of the code of conduct.

ACDP KZN executive chair, Nel Sewraj has called for the immediate dismissal and salary docking of the KwaDukuza municipality (KDM) employee that crashed his municipality vehicle into a lamp post in Zen Drive, Ballito on Friday morning, October 2 while allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

He said that type of behaviour was a breach of the code of conduct for municipal employees as laid out in schedule two of the municipal systems act. He said the employee had brought KDM into disrepute and compromised the integrity of the municipality.

Sewraj also claimed that there was no need for an inquiry or investigation because police evidence proved the excessive consumption of alcohol and the guilt of the employee. He said the employee endangered the public and caused damage to municipal property.

“The ACDP therefore recommends the immediate dismissal of this employee and, perhaps, the docking of his salary to compensate for the vehicle and the light post which are both municipal properties,” said Sewraj.

Umhlali SAPS’ Lt Col Dieter Fittkau said further blood tests confirmed that the driver was over the legal limit, he was released on bail and will appear in court later.

A resident who saw the vehicle drive off after hitting the lamp post, alerted the authorities.

The white Citi Golf was spotted at the Caltex garage in Ballito and Viva Security’s JP Viljoen followed the vehicle to the Salt Rock library.

KDM traffic and Umhlali SAPS arrived and according to Viljoen, a breathalyser test reportedly found that the driver was over the legal limit.

The vehicle had a blown out tyre and was impounded.

Fittkau said when arrested on drunk driving charges, it was normal procedure for a person to be released on bail and only to appear in court about six months later due to the backlog in cases.
