Bus and service station set alight during Glendale protest

Residents angry about poor condition of RDP houses.

About 300 residents of Berea in Glendale outside KwaDukuza, closed the P104 road during a service delivery protest on Monday, October 5.

Protesters set alight an old filling station and a bus.

According to Glendale SAPS communications officer sergeant Nhlaliyenza Mahlobo, the residents were complaining about their RDP houses, which they claim are not in a good condition.

Ndwedwe municipality mayor Maxwell Hadebe said he is aware of the problem.

“We did get complaints about cracks in the walls and toilets being built on the wrong yards,” said Hadebe.

He said they contacted the human settlements department and they were told that maintenance for damaged RDP houses is no longer the government’s job.

“Our planning and housing manager spoke with the people and on Monday next week, a public meeting will be held. We will inform them on what measures we are going to take regarding their issue,” said Hadebe.

No one was arrested on the day and the road is open again.
