Mayor supports peaceful co-existence in Shakashead

Cultural Unity Festival as part of re-integrating foreign nationals in community.

On Sunday a Cultural Unity Festival was launched in Shakashead in support of foreigners that came under attack during the recent xenophobic attacks.

KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu said he was happy about the fact that most victims have moved back to their communities and social co-existence and unity has been restored.

The mayor had a one on one with some immigrants who said that they were also happy about the re-integrated process.

The Shakashead community welcomed the foreign nationals as equal citizens with rights too.

The festival follows the spate of violent attacks against foreign immigrants in some parts of KwaZulu- Natal recently.

Mthembu said he was a bit concerned about the minor incidents that transpired within the community against foreign nationals.

He described the exercise as a mechanism that will help bring back the dignity that the people of Shakashead deserve.

“The Freedom Charter holds true that South Africa belongs to all who live in it. As the people of KwaDukuza, we owe it to ourselves to ensure we value the objectives contained in the Freedom Charter and the aspirations, legacy and spirits of our fallen heroes. Our local heroes stood for freedom, peace and unity, let us not compromise the dignity we deserve, we have travelled a long journey to be where we are today,” said Mthembu.

“We cannot allow instability through human action, claim supremacy of our fledgling democracy.”

The event was also convened to engage the community about service delivery improvements and infrastructural development.
