Umdloti lights up

New street lights making Umdloti a brighter place.

Umdloti’s human residents and duikers, monkeys and dassies are thrilled that the once dark and dangerous curves of Bellamont Road are now lit up, thanks to the UIP.

Driving into Umdloti and up to Bellamont Road used to be a scary trip at night and after Ethekwini’s Electricity Unit stated that they cannot keep replacing the stolen copper cables due to cost, it seemed that Umdloti was doomed to darkness.

“The previous, wooden light poles have been removed and new concrete poles have been put in,” said Bellamont’s UIP representative, Caroline Wyly-Simkins.

The concrete poles also have a wide concrete base and a special clamp around the pole, which are methods to deter potential cable thieves from getting to the cable.

“We have active security who patrol the area, therefore any attempted cable theft should be seen by the security and stopped.”

The street light work is working its way up to the M4 off ramp, as more and more lights are shining at night.

Hopefully with these security measures in place and the watchful eye of the UIP, the light will continue to shine and more lights will be fixed.
